Want to Make Big Changes? Start by Nailing the Basics

If you build your manager’s trust, you’ll be allowed to make the changes you believe are needed—but it takes time.


When you first start in a role, your manager wants you to stay in your lane and get really good at your core responsibilities before expanding and trying to do more. This can be difficult, especially if you’re eager to make a name for yourself and have a greater impact.


The way to get there is by excelling at your primary responsibilities. By consistently meeting or exceeding expectations, you build trust in your ability to deliver. Over time, that trust will earn you the opportunity to take on larger, riskier challenges.


For example, I’ve had ideas for years about how organizations could operate in ways that make work suck less and integrate more humanity into how we work. I’m finally at a point where I can begin implementing those changes in my own workplace.
