Projects Need Time to Breathe

Recently I was leading a brainstorming session to downselect improvement projects we will take on. There was a lot of discussion and meandering around the related topics. By the end of the meeting, we had only reviewed about a quarter of the projects.

When the meeting concluded one of the participants asked if we could do any work offline. I interpreted this request as an attempt to progress faster through the activity.

Some activities cannot go faster if we want to do them right. Projects where the tasks are known and all that is required is execution are candidates for going faster. Projects with unknowns where brainstorming and consensus are required need time to breathe to come up with the best resolution.

When you are working on these types of projects be sure to give yourself plenty of time to complete it and avoid stressing about the rate of progress.
