Investing Your Money vs. Wasting Your Money (on education)

There is a growing number of people that are questioning standard academic education (I happen to be one of them). We are really not sure if we are getting a return on our investment in education.

The problem I see is that many people still blindly go to college just because it is “what everyone else is doing” without actually considering the value you receive for the cost. We are willing to shell out thousands and thousands of dollars and are not sure what we get back.

On top of that we are willing to pay full price for a vehicle, couch, cable TV, etc. All of this money wasted without even giving it a thought.

Then there are coaches, consultants, counselors, and self improvement books. There is so much information out there, most of it costing less than college (maybe even giving you more value). Many of these sources are proven to add value. When you mention it to some people (the same ones that are willing to throw money away like in the above examples) and they immediately think the book, coach, etc is a waste or even a scam.

Why is it people are so afraid to get information from another proven source?

My recommendation is be willing to spend some time in your local library. If that works well for you then go spend $15 on a book. If you can get 1 idea from that book that is worth $30 you have doubled your investment. It is as simple as that.

Now go learn something on the cheap.

  1. That’s a great comparison! We’ll get an $800.00 TV (maybe the third one for the house) and yet we are afraid to hire a coach to help us with our business.

With the TV you know exactly what you are getting. With a coach (or insert other educational tool here) there is no pre-determined result for you to count on. The toughest variable is introduced (can I pull it off) and the real challenges begin.

    1. Or is it that people don’t do it because they might fail or that they have to work a little harder. Maybe some people don’t want it to be made obvious that they are lazy.

  2. We’re dealing with people’s perception here. The same thing rings true with our personal health. People typically aren’t willing to spend money on organic food, quality vitamins, supplements, etc. Yet they’ll spend money for a doctor’s visit and at the pharmacy. You either spend money to be healthy or you spend money to be sick.
