You Have To Pull You Up By The Bootstraps

If you have been reading my posts for a while you will recognize a common theme. I want you to be intentional about your life.

You cannot make it as a wandering generality. You must become a meaningful specific.” -Zig Ziglar

You have to plan and make mindful decisions about what you want your life to be like. Most people spend more time planning a vacation then they spend planning their lives. Then they wonder why they are not enjoying lives.

People go to college because that is what everybody else is doing, they pick a major because they think it will make them the most money. They climb the corporate ladder because that they can make more money and do not realize the lifestyle cost. They buy the new car, house, TV, etc. trying to be like everybody else. Then they buy a huge cable package with one million channels so they can escape from a life they do not love.

If any of this sounds like you then you probably feel like you are being pushed through life like a current taking you out to sea. I want to help you but all I can do is give you the life preserver and cheer you on; you have to do all of the kicking and paddling.

The life preserver I am throwing you is a simple idea: you have to start deciding and planning. Even though the idea is easy the implementation is hard. It is mainly because you are changing a habit.

Creating a habit is like creating a walking path in the woods. The first time it takes a lot of time to get from point A to point B. You are kicking rocks out of the way and tripping over bushes. When you get to point B the first time you are tired and a bit bruised up. The next time you walk the path it is a little easier. Each time you walk the path it gets a little easier and the path gets a little wider. My recommendation is go start walking the path, a lot to widen it fast.

Your first action to creating this walking path is to set goals with your significant other. This week sit down with your significant other and make your goals for the next year.

Leave me comments to tell me how your family goal setting session is going.

  1. I love the concept of a walking path used in relation to creating a habit. Very, very true.

Breaking habits is tough. Fear of the unknown can be even more crippling. You have to dig down deep to find the courage needed to get past these obstacles. But it is worth the struggle. You only have one “you”, afterall.
